Community
As a Community Interest Company, or Social Enterprise, all of our profits are distributed between our member charities, but the work we do doesn't stop at fundraising. Take a look at how we have helped the local commnity over the last 13 years, and hope to continue doing so for many years to come!
Part of our remit is to make reusable items available to our local communities at affordable prices. In doing so, we hope to alleviate poverty and hardship - improving the quality of life of those around us.
We provide employment and opportunities for those from socially excluded backgrounds. We offer the chance to develop skills and socialise in a safe environment. As a result, we can reduce isolation, improve mental health and help those in our communities contribute to the area in which they live.
We have also been able to help out when a local primary school had a flood and lost most of their library. We were able to replace many of the damaged books, helping the school to start building their new library.
We have conducted a number of placements and volunteering opportunities since opening in 2010. These have helped individuals develop technical and interpersonal skills and have provided a workplace where individuals can grow and gain confidence.
Working with schools is another element of how we help support our local community. This is done in a variety of ways including work experience placements. In recent years we have been lucky to have some great students from Priesthorpe Academy, Lawnswood School, Leeds City College, Leeds Trinity University and the University of Leeds.
We have also co-hosted several visits to the waste site in conjunction with the Leeds City Council Waste Advisors team. Students were able to learn about the various recycling paths for items thrown away at the waste site, and we were able to talk to them about items that could be reused.
